A wonderful Italian story by Magnum Photos

What do you get one the most important photography agencies in the world for its birthday? Camera – Centro italiano per la fotografia is showing up at Magnum’s birthday with the best present we could imagine: Italy!

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the iconic cooperative’s foundation in 1947, an exhibition titled “L’Italia di Magnum. Da Henri Cartier-Bresson a Paolo Pellegrin” will open until May 21st 2017 at Camera’s headquarters in Turin.

Seven decades of Italy’s history will be showcased through some 200 images from the amazing Magnum Photos archives: from the 1930s’ “Grand Tour” captured by Henri Cartier-Bresson to photos of the war and postwar era by Robert Capa and David Seymour; from mid-century Rome in the eyes of Elliott Erwitt, to Picasso’s famous 1953 exhibition in Milan, interpreted with mastery by René Burri; from Togliatti’s funerals in 1964 (as told by Bruno Barbey) to Ferdinando Scianna’s reportage of Sicily between the 1960s and 1970s; from the 1980s, with Scianna’s portrait of a pre-politics Berlusconi and Martin Parr’s taste for the colorful trashiness of mass tourism, all the way to the 21st century with the G8 in Genoa, John Paul II’s funeral, and immigrants’ tragic arrivals on the country’s shores…

The exhibition is curated by Walter Guadagnini in collaboration with Arianna Visani, and will contribute to marking the special occasion of Magnum’s 70th anniversary. Buon compleanno!
